Before ‘self-care’ was coined, my mother always told me to ‘treat myself well, because no one else is guaranteed to do so’. That meant using and enjoying your nice things instead of ‘saving’ them. That meant exercising every day to burn stress rather than eating stress. And that meant real chocolate, because of you’re going to eat it, do it right. (I mean, what’s the point of diet chocolate).
Women are trained to put everyone else’s needs ahead of their own. Stop. When you are strong, you can do and build more. Some people like the airplane emergency metaphor- put on your own mask before assisting others. I say start taking care of yourself before it’s an emergency.
